Everything you would normally hide has to become part of the design. An island has no back wall, so storage, cabling, spare stock and staff bags need a built home rather than a corner, and branding has to work from four approach directions rather than one. Visitors also enter from wherever they like, so there is no single front — plan at least two natural ways in and stop the centre becoming a place for staff to gather.

It is the most effective way to be found across a hall, but it is not something you can simply install yourself. Rigging is controlled by the venue and carried out by their appointed contractor, must be booked ahead of the show, and is subject to rules on weight, drop height and available rigging points, all published in the technical manual for halls such as ExCeL London. If rigging is unavailable or over budget, a freestanding tower or tall header built into the stand achieves much of the same visibility.

Enough to cover the space, few enough that visitors do not feel outnumbered. Work out how many simultaneous conversations your layout genuinely supports — counters, demonstration positions and seats — and staff to that number rather than filling a rota. Give the team a defined place to stand that is not the entrance, because staff clustered at the opening is the single most common reason people walk past a large stand.

On a stand this size, almost always. A storeroom keeps cases, coats and stock out of sight, and its outer walls become extra graphic surface rather than dead space. Put it against the least valuable sightline — a corner facing a neighbouring stand rather than a main aisle — and size it around what you are genuinely bringing, since every square metre it occupies is floor you paid for. Give it a light inside if it doubles as a preparation area.

A platform lets you run cabling safely and defines your footprint, but it introduces an edge people can trip over and normally requires a ramp so the stand stays accessible to everyone. Carpet or vinyl laid directly on the hall floor is simpler and cheaper, with cables run in floor trunking instead. Check the venue's rules on adhesives and floor fixings before you commit, since many halls prohibit anything that marks the concrete.

Order the supply from the organiser well ahead and specify where you need it, because a single socket in one corner of 36 square metres is close to useless. Add up the actual load of screens, lights, laptops and demonstration equipment rather than estimating it, and keep AV on its own circuit so a lighting fault does not take your presentation down with it. Run and test all cabling before the graphics go on — chasing a cable behind fitted fabric is a miserable job.

Design for two distances. Anything above head height is read from across the hall, so it should carry your name and one simple idea in large, high-contrast type; detail, product information and calls to action belong at eye level where someone standing at the stand can read them. Avoid printing an identical panel on all four sides — vary the message so a visitor walking around learns something new rather than seeing a repeat. Work backwards from the organiser's build schedule, not from your own diary. Large stands are given specific access windows, and vehicle marshalling, lifting equipment and contractor passes all have to be arranged in advance. Have the kit delivered to your own premises first, since UK delivery is free, so you can check the graphics against the proof and dry-build the structure while there is still time to correct anything.
